About 1:1 Coaching
Each session is conducted via Zoom and tailored entirely to where you are in your practice. There is no fixed curriculum, the session begins with you moving, and the feedback, correction, and instruction that follows is determined by what I observe. For students in the earlier stages that typically means postural correction, structural alignment, and building a clearer felt sense of the foundational principles. For more advanced practitioners the focus shifts toward the subtler layers, the quality of internal connection through transitions, the continuity of Peng under movement, the development of the body method as an integrated whole rather than a collection of locally managed parts. Beyond correction, these sessions are an opportunity to deepen your understanding of the internal mechanics that the course material introduces but cannot fully transmit on its own. Questions that arise from your practice, concepts that remain intellectually clear but not yet physically available, movement patterns that feel correct but lack the quality you are looking for, these are exactly what one-to-one time is for. The goal of each session is to give you something specific and felt to take back into your solo practice, so that the time between sessions is as productive as possible.
Meet Your Instructor
I have been training Chen-style Taijiquan with Wang Haijun for close to twenty years, beginning in my mid-twenties after a background in Capoeira. That background gave me certain advantages: coordination, body awareness, a comfort with physical learning, but it did not spare me from the fundamental challenge that most adult starters face. I began with significant structural restrictions, particularly in my shoulders, and in the early years developed knee problems serious enough to take me out of practice entirely for three years. The path back into the art, and through it, has been a long process of resolving structural compensations, remodelling fascial tissue, and developing the interoceptive clarity to feel what was actually happening in my body. Having navigated that path is an asset to my teaching. Teaching adults who come to the practice later in life, often with bodies that have already accumulated years of compensatory patterns and fossilised fascial tissue, requires a teacher who understands that learning path from the inside. I do. Combined with a framework for explaining the internal principles in biomechanical and movement science terms that make them accessible without diluting them, I am well placed to guide students through a learning path that produces real, embodied development rather than a superficial familiarity with the external choreography. The internal mechanics of the art are not theoretical knowledge. They are embodied reality, something I can feel, demonstrate, and transmit.
